We invite scholars working in any aspect of the field of environmental humanities, broadly defined, including those working in the fields of area studies, literature, history, philosophy, religion, anthropology, geography, and more. We are especially interested in those scholars whose work is multi-disciplinary, methodologically innovative, and citizen- or activist-oriented.

The Seed Box program was founded to respond to what we see as four main problems in relation to environmental matters:

• Alienation from environmental issues
• Apocalyptic framing of environmental problems
• Compartmentalization of problems
• The problems of a technocratic approach

Accordingly, scholars whose work is addressing one or more aspects of these four problems are especially encouraged to apply. The relevance in relation to research and other activities within The Seed box will also be taken into account.

Eligibility

• Applicants for the mid-career fellowship must hold a terminal degree (Ph.D., MFA, or equivalent) from a Swedish or foreign university. We invite you to define “mid-career” as specific to your situation using the “associate professor” designation as a guideline.
• Applicants for the PhD candidacy fellowship must have advanced to candidacy and be actively working on dissertation research and/or writing.
• Applicants need not—but may—have been involved with Seed Box program in the past. In the case of equally merited applications, those who have not previously received funding from us will be given priority.

How to Apply

Submit to theseedbox@liu.se in one single PDF file the following documents, in this order:

• a letter of application,
• a research statement, and
• a full c.v.

The letter of application should introduce your academic research and experience generally, with an attention to your specific environmental humanities contributions. In the application letter, please address one or more of the four Seed Box problem areas in relation to environmental matters, and give a concrete proposal for student, community, or other public engagement during the residency. The research statement should describe the proposed research to be undertaken or written up during the residency and should be no longer than two pages, single spaced (ca. 1200 words).

About the Residency

The residency can be taken for four consecutive weeks during 2019, providing availability of our program staff and space.

The selected fellows will get an office space, library access, Internet, printing, and other campus services. They will be invited to participate in all Seed Box and other related events. Costs and expenses due to the residency will be discussed in relation to the individual case.

We ask that our fellows give a public talk, lecture, or seminar about their work sometime during their residency.

About the Seed Box

Located at Linköping University, The Seed Box Environmental Humanities Collaboratory is a national Swedish initiative with international scope, jointly funded by Mistra, the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Environmental Research; and Formas, The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences, and Spatial Planning.

As articulated by Mistra and Formas, the purpose of the Seed Box programme “is to bring about a vigorous national initiative in environmentally oriented humanities, with the ambition of achieving international reference status within a few years. The programme is to be interdisciplinary with a core of humanities.”

The long-term goal of the program is thus to establish a high-quality international research environment and a national node for Environmental Humanities at Linköping University.
